“What makes you think you can be a writer anyway?”
This is the juicy heart of the watermelon I am trying to get to.
What makes me think I’m a writer? Everything and nothing.
On any given day, the answer to this question might be anywhere from “I know I am destined to be one!” to “I actually don’t think I can be one at all.”
So, in an effort to answer this question and dig into the heart of the watermelon, I’m going to use a couple of posts to look at how I got here. Sure it’s a bit self-indulgent to do this, but fun-fact: writers are narcissists! And anyway, the processes of writing down these stories will help me convince myself that this “I am a writer” declaration is real.
Looking back, there were many people who were holding giant billboard signs telling me where I should have been going towards all along. I didn’t ignore them per se. I just didn’t know I was going that way.
The most important sign holders who make up the main cast of my story includes:
Karen Douziech. My beloved high school English teacher who was the first person to really see me in a “I see you” (Avatar) way. Mrs. Douziech if you read this, please email me because I cannot thank you enough!
Vern Thiessen. ILYSM Vern! I promise when I’ve written something worthy enough I will hunt you down and scream at you: “look what you made me do!”
My English 101 Professor from the U of A. I am so sorry Mr. Aged White Man; your name has totally escaped me. In my defence I was 1 of over 100 kids in that first year class and I literally talked to you twice the entire year.
Some supporting characters are:
Alexandra the Artful Dodger. Girl, I hope you’re resting in peace because look at what this has all become since you left us for greener pastures.
The managing partner of the second big-bad-corporate-law firm I worked for. Randall only makes two appearances and delivers only one line each time. But man, does he ever kill his one-liners.
Kim Morrison. My Capitalism dealer, boss-woman extraordinaire, and one of the most all around bad-ass bitches out there. It was Kim who helped push me over the edge and finally really go for it.
There is a whole host of recurring characters that will also make appearances including my happy buddha husband, multiple girl-squads, and, of course, the OGs mom and dad.
With that, let’s get this get this story started!
