Every Thursday I have a legal team standup meeting with all the other lawyers at the foundation. We begin the meeting by celebrating a win or sharing a gratitude for the week. In all the years of my corporate career I have never encountered such a well adjusted and emotionally healthy group of lawyers. I am so very grateful.
In the vein of celebrations and gratitude, I am taking this moment to celebrate a huge win this week; one of those one in a thousand days where I get to say that I pushed publish on a book. Torts is finally done. Ta-da! Woohoo! rah rah! YESSSSS!
This was another 4 or 5 year long process. I finished the writing part of the book years ago but then I got stuck in the editing process. When that was finally done this February, I got stuck in the publishing process. In the last couple of weeks I faced the last mile hurdle of having to figure out how to reconstitute my cover-page. I was finally able to grab my husband this week to help me with it (praise be!).
And then there it was. Tort Law Picture Book. Birthed and done. Off into the world.
Like all of my picture books have been so far, it’s been such an up and down expedition of endless starts and stops. The pandemic didn’t help (even though you’d think it would have) and finishing Torts wound up sitting permanently on my to-do list. I had a goal of publishing it before giving birth last year but when that didn’t happen I lost all clarity on if and when it would.
But here we are!
Torts is my best book yet and my fourth picture book overall. I know we’re not supposed to play favourites as book moms but Torts is definitely my favourite. It’s full of dark humour and all sorts of eyebrow raising fact patterns. I included a lot of my free standing comics in the book and it is more polished than the others. I feel like (hope) I am getting incrementally better at these.
Of course I still have to do a whole host of other work along with it like promoting it, updating my website, proofing it, reaching out to people etc. but for now I can take a moment to say thank you to the universe for giving me the space and the privilege of creating this book.
I can’t think of anything more profound to say than thank you… from the bottom of my heart.
In previews now: Tort Law Picture Book by me! Woohoo!
