An ode to my day job work husband

welaquan.substack.com

I am going on leave starting next Monday from my day job so today I want to celebrate my work-husband because as of next Monday he will be someone else’s work-husband.

We started our day jobs on the same day and now we are ending our time together also on the same day. Poetic aint it? the universe works in magical ways. I am sad that it’s the end but I am grateful for the time we had together.

We all need a friend. Perhaps nowhere even more so than at work. If you think about it, us working adults spend the vast majority of our waking hours with the people we work with. I think it’s interesting that we don’t talk more about the health of our workplaces because we often downplay that part of ourselves. We often pour so very much of ourselves into our work and yet we pretend like it’s a switch we can just turn off after the 6PM punch-out time.

But this is a fallacy. We carry our work selves with us everywhere. It is often the largest part of us, even if we don’t want it to be. Having someone who understands you and hears you at work is everything. It’s hard to survive in an environment (in my opinion) without one.

We all just want to be seen.

Cody, my adorable work-hubs, was that person for me. I call him my day one ride or die for good reason. We talked almost daily/hourly on Slack and he has been the constant for me in an environment of brutally relentless change. It’s been an honour to serve with him and I am so thrilled that he’s moving onto something bigger and better. I have learned so much from watching how he moves through the world; how he walked the fine line between truth and positivity (all the while managing to avoid being toxically positive). While it hurts my heart that he still doesn’t get my Captain Planet or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle references, I will forgive him these sins because he is a breath of fresh air and true gem of a human being. He has reminded me that there are great white men out there and that they aren’t all pale stale males!

Cody, if you’re reading this: put a ring on that girl of yours and use all them travel perks! You’re young only once and there’s a big wide world out there. Keep on truckin’ and see you on the other-side!
